Externships for veterinary medicine students:

Washington Heights Veterinary Clinic is an outstanding choice for a veterinary externship due to its commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care in a diverse and dynamic community. The clinic boasts a team of highly skilled veterinarians and support staff who are dedicated to mentoring and training the next generation of veterinary professionals. Externs benefit from hands-on experience with a wide variety of cases and procedures, ranging from routine wellness exams to complex surgeries, in a supportive and collaborative environment. Additionally, the clinic's emphasis on client education and preventative care provides externs with a well-rounded perspective on veterinary medicine, preparing them for successful careers in the field.

Our structured externship program involves specific rotations and interactive participation from the veterinary student. Our goal is for our externs to leave our practice with pearls of real-world information to take with them beyond graduation.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited DVM program (or equivalent)
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects and animals up to 40 pounds
  • Must submit a CV or resume

Externships for veterinary technical school students (VTI, PIMA, etc.):

Washington Heights Veterinary Clinic is an ideal setting for high school students completing clinical hours toward their Veterinary Assistant Certification due to its exceptional hands-on learning environment guided by a highly skilled and knowledgeable team of professionals. The clinic’s commitment to practical, real-world experience ensures that students can actively engage in a variety of tasks, from assisting with medical procedures to participating in patient care and client communication. Under the mentorship of experienced veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and Certified Veterinary Assistants, students receive personalized instruction and feedback, allowing them to build confidence and competence in their skills. This immersive experience not only helps students meet certification requirements but also prepares them for a successful career in veterinary medicine by providing invaluable exposure to the daily operations of a veterinary practice.

  • Must be currently enrolled in a TVMA-accredited veterinary high school program (or equivalent)
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Must submit a CV or resume
  • Must have parental/guardian consent if under the age of 18
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects and animals up to 40 pounds
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Must maintain good attendance, be engaged, and demonstrate professionalism throughout the course of the internship

Shadowing Opportunities:

Washington Heights Veterinary Clinic offers shadowing opportunity for those interested in veterinary medicine to immerse themselves in the multifaceted world of private practice. This clinic provides a comprehensive internship experience where students can explore every aspect of veterinary care, from hands-on clinical procedures to the daily operations of a busy practice. With a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about teaching, participants receive valuable exposure to patient care, medical diagnostics, and client interactions. The supportive environment encourages curiosity and learning, allowing participants to gain practical experience while observing the integral roles within a veterinary team. This 1 to 2-week experience not only deepens their understanding of veterinary medicine but also inspires future career paths in the field.
